Fashion Spotlight: Horror Vacui (The Fear of Empty)

This is my first post since our world has been turned upside down due to Covid-19. And while I am disappointed that so many events and Spring plans have been canceled, I am also taking the time to pause, reset and spend time on things that fill my heart : such as playing more with my children, taking better care of myself through exercise, diving into new inspirational finds either in the design or fashion worlds, and finally, finding the time to write a blog post.

Focusing on the news everyday and worrying about the things I can not change has caused anxiety and angst in myself and I know it has in so many others as well. So today, I thought I would share one of my new fashion finds as a little bit of beauty can go a long way to lift my spirits and daydream about the better days ahead. I hope this little post will inspire you to dwell on something that makes you happy today even if it seems a little frivolous!

I fell down a rabbit hole when I first discovered German based fashion brand ‘Horror Vacui’ on Instagram when I was immediately attracted to delicate dressmaker tailoring, floral patterns and elaborate details. Horror Vacui means “the fear of emptiness” in Latin and is based on the principle that it is “human instinct to decorate one’s surroundings. In arts and visual disciplines, horror vacui is the urge to fill all empty space with all kinds of details.” That is a philosophy that I can certainly get behind and resonate with at this moment in time. Take a look at some of my favorite pieces.

Horror Vacui can be found locally in Charlotte at Capitol or online at Net-A-Porter or MatchesFashion.

May you continue to fill your extra time or ‘empty space’ with details that bring you happiness and peace during this unsettling time. Stay safe and inspired my friends.

Yours truly,
Brooke
